The SCC MediaServer Web Browser Access Module is an extension for Microsoft Internet Information Server (Windows) and for Zeus Web Server (Linux) that allows searching, viewing and editing records stored within an SCC MediaServer system via a standard Web browser.

The Module supports both "Lightweight" and "Power" users, with access levels controlled by the user's login and defined in the SCC MediaServer User Manager.

"Lightweight" and "Power" Users
Lightweight users are able to perform searches, view results, issue delivery commands and optionally download. Power users can also crop images, edit attributes using custom forms and delete records. The actual permissions granted to each individual user are assigned by the system administrator.

Image cropping
Cropping of photos is driven by a Java applet that is downloaded to the browser during the first use, and allows cropping using either freeform drag or by fixed dimensions from a selection of measurement units. The applet also allows rotation of the preview to facilitate easier cropping. Like SCC MediaGrid, photo cropping is performed using the low-resolution version of the file with the final crop dimensions written back to the MediaServer database.

During download or launch, the database crop information is transferred and embedded into the image file. This "soft crop" information can then be interpreted and applied to the image by a MediaFactory image processing channel as a part of the outgoing production workflow

Record Editing
Record editing is implemented via standard HTML forms technology. Web forms are created using any standard HTML authoring package that offers a simple forms building interface. Forms can contain any combination of text entry fields, pop-up menus, buttons etc., and can include custom Java scripts for additional functionality, such as dependent pop-ups, field validation, and so on. All that is required for the form to operate within the MediaServer Web environment is for fields within the form to match the name and type of corresponding attribute fields within MediaServer libraries. When the module is enabled the Web browser client adds an "Edit" button to each search result, which when clicked extracts the data from the database and automatically populates the default form. If alternate form designs are required, they are simply saved to the same location on the server and when the Edit button is clicked a dialog is presented to the user offering a selection of these forms for use.

Once open, the contents of the form can be freely edited and subsequently saved back to the database. As with SCC MediaGrid, while a record is being edited it is locked within the database to prevent other users overwriting the record at the same time.
